    This portrait course introduces students to the essential skills needed to create convincing portraits in both drawing and painting. During the first half of the course, students will develop a strong foundation in drawing by learning proportion, perspective, basic anatomy, and value, with an emphasis on seeing and simplifying forms. In the second half, students will transition into painting, exploring value, colour mixing, and practical painting techniques through guided exercises and a final portrait project. Through demonstrations, hands-on practice, and individual feedback, students will gain a better understanding of structure, light, and colour while building confidence in creating expressive and realistic portraits.     Dive deeper and build on the basics of watercolour such as colour mixing, techniques including graded washes and their combinations, wet in wet principles, assessment and strategy and planning, and knowing your image thoroughly through drawing. Technical exercises will be presented to strengthen those techniques. The depiction of space consistently (by assessing and presenting lighting and elements of perspective) will be addressed. Participants will be mentored toward completing any more challenging images of their choice, beyond their current capabilities.     The light and atmosphere are incredible. We will paint in water soluble oil and acrylics. We will explore the greens and blues, low light and sunshine of this beautiful Island. We will paint  the rolling hills, stone walls, the old buildings and ruins dotted around the countryside,  and some of the many sheep and one shepherd I have encountered.  We will paint a number of paintings in this class, sometimes spending two classes on a painting. I will supply the reference images for each class and you will have the opportunity to add your own touch to the final painting. There will be a few architectural elements explored as well.     The beauty of nature comes in many forms. This course is an opportunity to create artwork inspired by an element of the natural world. First is a landscape, where you will learn to depict depth, play with light and colour, and create a space to get lost in. Next is an animal; learn to tackle an animal painting using colour, brushstrokes and shadow to infuse life into a furry creature. Lastly, learn how to use shape and composition to paint a botanical that jumps from the canvas. Each painting will include step-by-step instructor demos, as well as plenty of one-on-one assistance.     An eight week, intensive course that covers the fundamentals of drawing. While primarily aimed at beginners, the course will also help firm up the skills of students with some drawing experience. Along with covering the fundamentals of drawing, students will develop a basic understanding of values (light and shadow) and perspective drawing (object drawing and architectural drawing). Each session will consist of an intensive step by step delivery, with students working closely with the instructor. Following completion of the program, students will have the comprehensive skill set necessary to accurately render observable objects. While not mandatory, some drawing during the week between sessions will enhance the learning experience.

    This first of its kind course will explore the transition of Plein Air landscape painting studies to studio landscape painting based on preliminary outdoor sketches and photographic references. Time will be spent both in Plein Air and in studio early in the course, transitioning to studio work only. Students will be taught to design/compose from references, develop relevant painting techniques, skilfull use of mediums, and surface materials, with the goal of producing successful landscape paintings for a professional body of work.
