Join Barbara for a four week mentoring class as she guides you through the topics of composition, shape, value and colour, light and shadow as well as painting techniques. Expect Barbara to discuss various art related topics as she moves about the class and circulates through the studio for individual attention. Students should bring their chosen subject matter in either oil or acrylic. Participants can choose to work one one piece throughout the 4 weeks, or bring a new piece each week. The choice is yours, and Barbara is there to help you on your path to clarifying your voice. Bring your normal working supplies and chosen painting surface (plus any images that you would like to paint) as well as a cover for the OAS table. Materials List - BChapman - mentoring

The impressionist artists were not trying to paint a reflection of real life, but an ‘impression’ of what the person, light, atmosphere, object or landscape looked like to them. And that’s why they were called impressionists! They tried to capture the movement and life of what they saw and show it to us as if it were happening before our eyes. With a focus on the fundamentals of composition, this course delves into the importance of visual set up, values and brush strokes to create aesthetic and emotive paintings in an impressionist manner. You’ll work initially to create pencil sketches that will evolve, with the instructor’s guidance, into fully developed paintings. With attention to light and values, colour, shape, placement and proportion of elements, and the harmony of brush strokes, you’ll learn how to develop works that are visually strong and feel fulfilling and meaningful. Not at all realism, this is fun with portraiture and colour! Basically, we're working from a black and white photo and using bright colours to make a vivid and fun portrait based on the values, rather than the boring 'right' colours. Don't miss this chance to break away from copying all the colours in a reference. Instead you can experience the freedom to assign new colours in the correct value and learn to loosen up a bit. Students will work from their own reference image. This is suitable for anyone with an understanding of the watercolour basics. Colourful Portraits in Watercolour Materials List
