The absence of great women artists in art history was exclusively the result of bias in society -- scholars, curators, collectors, museum directors, critics – and had nothing to do with any lack of talent on behalf of women artists. The best women painters, sculptors and photographers proved their work at least equal to men at every opportunity, when given the chance. This course will focus on getting acquainted with six of these female artists through our own interpretation of one of their works each week of the course: Emily Carr, Anne Savage, Vera Weatherbie, Käthe Kollwitz, Mary Pratt, Boschka Layton Click HERE for the Materials List for 6 WOMEN 6 ARTISTS (1)

Out of stockThe impressionist artists were not trying to paint a reflection of real life, but an ‘impression’ of what the person, light, atmosphere, object or landscape looked like to them. And that’s why they were called impressionists! They tried to capture the movement and life of what they saw and show it to us as if it were happening before our eyes. With a focus on the fundamentals of composition, this course delves into the importance of visual set up, values and brush strokes to create aesthetic and emotive paintings in an impressionist manner. You’ll work initially to create pencil sketches that will evolve, with the instructor’s guidance, into fully developed paintings. With attention to light and values, colour, shape, placement and proportion of elements, and the harmony of brush strokes, you’ll learn how to develop works that are visually strong and feel fulfilling and meaningful. Out of stockNot at all realism, this is fun with portraiture and colour! Basically, we're working from a black and white photo and using bright colours to make a vivid and fun portrait based on the values, rather than the boring 'right' colours. Don't miss this chance to break away from copying all the colours in a reference. Instead you can experience the freedom to assign new colours in the correct value and learn to loosen up a bit. Students will work from their own reference image. This is suitable for anyone with an understanding of the watercolour basics. Colourful Portraits in Watercolour Materials List
