Your instructor will encourage you to explore and guide you through the various stages of development of your artwork. Experiment with mixing traditional mediums such as painting, drawing and non-traditional materials – found objects, textiles, collage elements and more will be celebrated. The emphasis is on creative exploration, allowing students to break with tradition and discover inspiration through new exciting ways of creating visual art. The elements and principles of design are fundamental concepts used in visual arts and design to create effective and aesthetically pleasing compositions. The elements are the basic building blocks, while the principles guide how those elements are used. You will explore the elements of design – line, shape, form, colour, value, space and texture – and create works around them. The principles of design – from balance and proportion to repetition, and white space (and everything in between) – will apply to every aspect of your practice going forward.

This four-week class will guide you through the fundamental stages of drawing, teaching you to perceive values, perspective, and composition. You will learn how to translate your drawings into coloured paintings through colour mixing and application. This course is designed for both beginners and intermediate painters to unlock your artistic potential and discover your unique creative expression.

This short course is packed with tabletop printmaking techniques, with additional access to a small printing press (12 x 24). “An introduction to integrated Printmaking” will launch you into a wonderful world of possibilities to expand your art practice with affordable, safe and accessible printmaking techniques adaptable to a variety of media. This course also touches on the philosophy behind an artistic mindset and approach, which is formative and process based. Plenty of inspiration will be offered for the artist to carry forward into their own, individual creations. Fabric printing can be included. Each week, including the first, will be preceded by a 15 minute YouTube demo in order to minimize class demo time and maximize in studio work time. This will also allow participants to bring the materials required to pursue their own interests. This course is ‘hive’ designed to encourage the development of social artistic learning connections.(AND...students will have the opportunity to follow up with a six week, open studio series to continue to explore and play.) Out of stockJoin Barbara as you explore a looser, more impressionistic approach to oil painting for beginners. Barbara will guide you as you learn how to start your paintings, how to use your paint and brushes, and recognize shape and value in a composition. She will also touch on colour relationships and composition which play an important role in conveying a strong visual statement. Expect to play with a variety of colours and colour relationships in the palettes of the great impressionists. Lots of individual attention will guide you as you start your journey of painting in an impressionistic style. Note: This is also an ideal class for anyone who has taken one of Barbara's earlier beginner classes as there will be all new subject matter and she will build on her previous lessons. In this 8-week course, we’ll deep dive into the drawing program Procreate (for iPad). Other digital drawing programs are welcome, but will differ slightly in layout and usage. Topics like user interface, brush sets, layer organization, adjustments, export settings, and more will be explored in depth. Procreate-specific features like animation, selection tools, and flexible colour palettes will also be studied in a practical, hands-on approach. Throughout the course, we’ll develop personal projects, or a themed project while using digital techniques like clipping masks, blending modes, textures, and brush sets. No experience needed!Please bring your own iPad! This is a digital only course, participants without an iPad or tablet will not receive the full experience and knowledge this course has to offer.

This course focuses on drawing and sketching real-life subjects in the form of everyday objects as well as specialized cast statues. The cast statues include depictions of statues and wall decals from the renaissance, casted using white plaster cast. These objects and casts will inspire students to create vividly authentic sketches, allowing them to enrich their artistic talents. With attention to value, form, perspective and proportion, you’ll be sure to learn skills that will further your artistic journey and develop works fueled by technical skill.

Dedicated time in Studio Two on Wednesday afternoons to make art with others at OAS. Take six weeks. Play and collaborate with other artists in this completely informal, co-operative studio setting. Gelli printers, collage artists, print-makers, and other mixed media artists are invited to join this social, productive and inspiring tabletop art group. Open to members and non-members, this is the perfect opportunity to work on your art with others and learn from each other along the way. No formal instruction whatsoever, but feel free to offer / receive feedback and encouragement from others, (as you wish).
