This portrait course introduces students to the essential skills needed to create convincing portraits in both drawing and painting. During the first half of the course, students will develop a strong foundation in drawing by learning proportion, perspective, basic anatomy, and value, with an emphasis on seeing and simplifying forms. In the second half, students will transition into painting, exploring value, colour mixing, and practical painting techniques through guided exercises and a final portrait project. Through demonstrations, hands-on practice, and individual feedback, students will gain a better understanding of structure, light, and colour while building confidence in creating expressive and realistic portraits.

Bestselling Canadian author Camilla Gibb discovered that collage is a perfect companion to poetry. Join her to enjoy both -- a reading from her recently released poetry collection "I Used to be a Pisces" and a no-experience necessary collage workshop to explore intuitive connections between colour, shape, form, and even words. (You are welcome to bring your own materials (paper and non-paper); Camilla will have an assortment of paper resources.)

Focus on the dramatic presence of light and colour and gain a better understanding of composition. France is famous for expressing colour and light and so we will include these characteristics in our inspirational journey. We will explore a typical French scene with both landscape and architectural elements which are so characteristic of France. The Southwest of France, and Paris, with infinite possibilities will prove to be most exciting. Our painting will exemplify all of these elements to provide a beautiful result. Colour mixing, and Bonnie’s exciting use and interpretation of colour will be emphasized for students. If colour excites you, then this workshop is for you! Atmospheric and linear perspective will also be key objectives, and taught. Bonnie’s hands-on approach and exciting demos will inspire passion and luminous paintings. Bonnie's choice of the piece will be shared here, along with the materials list, following her return from France later this summer.

Gouache is one of the older painting mediums used. It is also one of the most forgiving and easiest painting mediums to use. Many great painters - from Sargent to Winslow Homer - used gouache, either on its own, or with their watercolor paintings. It is fairly easy to use - thick over thin applications of paint. You can paint from really dark backgrounds and slowly bring out the light in your work. It is really nice on smaller works that are done in your sketchbooks. There will be a number of pieces created in this workshop, and I will give you all the information you need to master this medium. I will demonstrate how to use it and give you ample time in class to practice the different and easy techniques. Above all, you will have fun using this paint.
