    Join Barbara for a four week mentoring class as she guides you through the topics of composition, shape, value and colour, light and shadow as well as painting techniques. Expect Barbara to discuss various art related topics as she moves about the class and circulates through the studio for individual attention. Students should bring their chosen subject matter in either oil or acrylic. Participants can choose to work one one piece throughout the 4 weeks, or bring a new piece each week. The choice is yours, and Barbara is there to help you on your path to clarifying your voice. These precious hours involve no formal instruction whatsoever, but feel free to offer / receive feedback and encouragement from others, (as you wish).

    Portrait Drawing Principles for the (just beyond) Beginner (Tuesdays 9:30am-12:30pm) Connie Lee (Level 1+) 8 weeks (Sept.2-Oct.21)

    In this portrait drawing course for just beyond beginners, Connie walks you through a step-by-step approach in fundamental portrait drawing methods. She will guide you on choosing materials, the correct way to hold your pencil, the ‘recognition’ of a visual image, getting the right proportions and perspective, and how to design strong compositions. She will cover how to accurately render crucial, realistic features, such as eyes, ears, and hair. Using dark pencil, white pencil, and toned paper you begin to understand what creates a successful portrait- one that captures a person’s spirit- expression, likeness, personality, and mood.     Discover the Double Primary Palette system (also known as the Split-Primary Palette) in order to gain control over the mystery of creating the colours you want to use for your practice. This four week beginner course provides the training to gain colour mixing proficiency in everything from warm and cool colours, through hue, saturation, and luminescence. In this brief class series, you will learn through a series of exercises. You will paint a variety of 2, 3, and 6 colour gradients, and ultimately full colour wheels in your chosen colour palette. Palette paint choices will be explored, and the colour mixing dynamics of each participant's current palette will become clear. In just a matter of a few weeks, you’ll be ready to choose, create, and control colour in your practice. The instructor will work in watercolour, but all mediums are welcome.     Practice and play with colour mixing using only six paints (Double Primary) to create several versions of the same image, yet with completely different effects. See for yourself the grace and impact that intentional colour mixing can have in your practice. Building on the theory of the Split Primary palette, this apprenticeship course will make your colour mixing intentional, with remarkable results. Build up your colours or knock them back – you will try both, and progress in the journey of developing your unique style as an artist.  While there is no prerequisite for this class, this course will apply the learning from the preceding class "Double Primary Colour Mixing (watercolour)".
