The impressionist artists were not trying to paint a reflection of real life, but an ‘impression’ of what the person, light, atmosphere, object or landscape looked like to them. And that’s why they were called impressionists! They tried to capture the movement and life of what they saw and show it to us as if it were happening before our eyes. With a focus on the principles of composition, this course delves into the importance of visual set up, values and brush strokes to create aesthetic and emotive paintings in an impressionist manner. You’ll work initially to create pencil sketches that will evolve, with the instructor’s guidance, into fully developed paintings. With attention to light and values, colour, shape, placement and proportion of elements, and the harmony of brush strokes, you’ll learn how to develop works that are visually strong and feel fulfilling and meaningful. Previous painting experience is required. Materials List

In this course, Heather takes students through the complete painting process, from underpainting to final details, with an emphasis on composition, colour harmony, design elements and technique. Basic drawing skills and experience with acrylics are prerequisite. Students will explore colour theory and further develop color mixing confidence and painting skills. Students will dialogue and explore strategies for overcoming barriers to personal expression and creativity. Each session will commence with a “show and share” time, always in a collaborative and supportive environment to get used to viewing and discussing paintings in various stages. Then, Heather will typically run a brief painting demo to break down the painting process, encourage new techniques and experiment with subject matter. The aim is to paint for at least half the class time and allow the practice to continue at home. Although the instructor provides references, students should begin to develop and bring their own images to encourage independent development and ensure originality in completed artwork. Out of stockIn this course, interpretation of the landscape painting takes precedence over accurate depiction. This means colors, shapes, and forms may be altered or exaggerated to convey a specific feeling or idea. For example, a sunset might be painted with vibrant, unnatural colors to evoke a sense of drama or emotion. Or A stormy sky might be used to symbolize turmoil or intensity. This may also include abstract or semi-abstract elements, such as simplified shapes, bold brushstrokes, or non-representational forms; trees might be reduced to geometric shapes, or the horizon line might be distorted to create a sense of movement.
