Interpretative Landscape painting is about moving from depiction to expression. It's about finding a unique voice within the timeless tradition of landscape art. An interpretive painting can make you feel the awe, fear, and power of being there. The landscape can become a metaphor for internal states (a turbulent sky for inner turmoil), the passage of time (layers of geological history), or commentary on our relationship with the environment. Use the landscape for a personal, emotional, or conceptual statement. The subject isn't the tree; it's the feeling the tree evokes. Any medium (must be non toxic). Bring nature to life in your painting —be bold, be curious, and let your passion guide your brush! Look closely—nature is everywhere and alive. Paint a delicate butterfly, a feathery or furry friend or the fiery glow of a sunset. Blend soft greens in a meadow, dash bright strokes for wildflowers, focus on the soft colours of a winter landscape or swirl blues in a flowing river. Notice how light dances on water, in trees, how shadows play a part in everything that nature has created and how every season changes and brings new wonders. This is an active class where students choose their favourite subject matter to paint. Judy Mayer Grieve Materials List for Art Classes

The absence of great women artists in art history was exclusively the result of bias in society -- scholars, curators, collectors, museum directors, critics – and had nothing to do with any lack of talent on behalf of women artists. The best women painters, sculptors and photographers proved their work at least equal to men at every opportunity, when given the chance. By luck of the draw, this course will focus on getting acquainted with 8 of these female artists through our own interpretation. 8 Women, 8 Artists

A crowning achievement in drawing is the ability to achieve a likeness quickly and effectively. To this end, this course will focus on drawing pencil portraits of live participants of this course in turns, simply with only pencil and paper, with the goal to achieve a complete portrait likeness within 15 minutes. Seven exercises from Betty Edwards' book, Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, will be practised to enable participants to see real shapes and designs, and we will discuss basic head anatomy and unique features of the portrait sitter. The unique beauty of each character who is sitting to be drawn will come alive as their “likeness” in these participants' drawings of fellow participants. This is a great opportunity to develop skills and draft personship. Brave beginners are welcome, as well as intermediate artists. Portrait - Materials List
