THINGS TO KNOW

Before Registering

  1. When you signup online you will receive a class confirmation emailed to you
  2. Registrations should be received a minimum of one week prior to class start
  3. Adult classes are geared to ages 18+.
  4. Adult students provide their own supplies and plastic tablecloths (readily available at the $ store).
  5. Please note that NO turpentine/linseed oil based solvents will be permitted. Oil painters must clean their brushes with vegetable oil or soap & water. Alternately, water-based oil paints are available at all art suppliers.
  6. Start dates are estimates only and may be subject to change.
  7. All students have the right to learn in a positive and creative environment. If any student disrupts the learning of others, or is disrespectful towards others, he or she will be given one warning by the instructor. In the case of a child the parent/guardian will be notified in writing by the program coordinator. Failure to correct the disruptive behaviour will result in the student’s removal from the course with no reimbursement of fees.
  8. The OAS does not offer make-up classes for students who are unable to attend scheduled classes.
  9. Payment must accompany registration. You may pay for your classes and workshops through our secure payment gateway. These are secured transactions and your credit card information is never stored. If you wish, you may ask to have a Paypal invoice sent to you.

    Let’s paint our glorious summer vibes. Did you know that Canada has the second largest supply of freshwater lakes in the world? Join Jacintha’s step by step weekend workshop to capture the beauty of our cottage country summer landscapes using larger brushes and palette knives for a more contemporary approach to creating art. Resplendent hues, colourful canoes and beautiful birches are all part of of our quintessential Canadian summer landscapes which will be the focus of this workshop.     In this 5 day crash course, you’ll learn all you need to know to get started on your digital painting journey. Applicable to most drawing/painting programs, this workshop will introduce concepts like elements of art and design, blending modes, facial proportions (portrait painting), painting from reference, and rendering. We will learn how to create interesting pieces of digital art with texture and atmosphere utilizing many different digital-specific techniques. By the end of the workshop, participants will have completed digital sketches, mini portraits, and rough landscapes while familiarizing themselves with digital drawing programs.  Suggested for participants aged 10 and up.  Instructor will be using Procreate for iPad.

    Unlock the vibrant world of watercolor painting in this wide ranging, hands-on workshop. Join us for an immersive session where you will explore a complete 'buffet' of watercolor painting. This workshop is tailored for those who are both new to the medium, and those with some experience as well. From a solid foundation, you will build confidence through guided instruction and practical exercises.​ From florals, to landscapes, food, to urban scenes, you will experience a new adventure every day of the four day course.     Always evolving, Judy's journey continues. This class is about the exploration of various artistic materials and techniques to create unique and diverse art. Students are encouraged to experiment with the option of personal reference material of choice and / or subject matter, such as landscape, abstract, figurative, portrait, and mixed media and to employ recycled materials for inspiration. Your instructor will encourage you to explore and guide you through the various stages of development of your artwork. Experiment with mixing traditional mediums such as painting, drawing and non-traditional materials – found objects, textiles, collage elements and more will be celebrated. The emphasis is on creative exploration, allowing students to break with tradition and discover inspiration through new exciting ways of creating visual art.     Pastel is a fun, intuitive medium that can produce extremely diversified effects from highly realistic to an almost painterly quality. This course will examine the basic principles and techniques of drawing in soft and oil pastel.  A variety of subject preferences including Still Life and Floral, Landscape and Portraiture will provide an opportunity for students to cultivate their foundational skills.     This four-week class will guide you through the fundamental stages of drawing, teaching you to perceive values, perspective, and composition. You will learn how to translate your drawings into coloured paintings through colour mixing and application. This course is designed for both beginners and intermediate painters to unlock your artistic potential and discover your unique creative expression.

    Join Barbara as you explore a looser, more impressionistic approach to oil painting for beginners. Barbara will guide you as you learn how to start your paintings, how to use your paint and brushes,  and recognize shape and value in a composition. She will also touch on colour relationships and composition which play an important role in conveying a strong visual statement. Expect to play with a variety of colours and colour relationships in the palettes of the great impressionists. Lots of individual attention will guide you as you start your journey of painting in an impressionistic style. Note: This is also an ideal class for anyone who has taken one of Barbara's earlier beginner classes as there will be all new subject matter and she will build on her previous lessons.     During this four-week course, learn several ways to paint a photo -- ANY photo you love -- from reference, such as using the grid method or scribble method. Find out how to stylize your subject, by choosing which details to enhance, and which to ignore.     Young artists will experience a world of colour, creativity and discovery this summer.  Join Julie for the perfect combination of fun and learning, where kids will experiment with a wide range of quality mediums and techniques in painting, drawing, sculpting, collage, t-shirt making, printing, baseball cap design, clay and much more!  Whether they are new to art or a regular artists, every child will leave with new skills, new friends and a wide variety of new creations. Camp is half day to allow kids the afternoon to practice their new skills at home or enjoy the sunshine. All materials are provided, including lots of take home crafts and wearable goodies! (Aprons will be provided, but please dress kids in clothes that can get messy.)

    In this crash watercolour course, Shelley will share watercolour basics and best practices for wannabe watercolourists and the importance of simplification. Learn about materials, washes, wet-on-wet, wet-on-dry, colour mixing, negative/positive painting, layering and some pretty cool textures. Through a series of exercises and small paintings, you'll gain a better understanding of the medium and the building process to create paintings of which you can genuinely be proud.   • Secondary students who are considering applying to OCAD (or any art program that requires a portfolio) for September 2026, 2027, or even 2028, this is your chance to develop your personal portfolio. Instead of scrambling to complete samples of your work in all required mediums, enjoy an approach that covers a wide variety in a supportive and fun environment.  Create drawing, sketches and paintings of still life, landscapes and figures, while building on your fundamentals of art including color, form, line, shape, space, texture and composition.
