You have been painting in your chosen medium, and now you’d like to move on to explore portraiture. This workshop introduces you to the fundamentals of drawing and painting portraits, starting with laying down the basic structure of the head and understanding how a face is built. You will learn how to construct facial features from a photo, with reasonable proportions, develop confident line work, and apply shading to create form and depth using pencil and charcoal. In this sustainable practice workshop, students will learn to find ‘hidden gems’ within their practice / discarded work to create professional-grade, smaller artworks mounted on wood. Students will learn composition by isolating successful areas of old paintings, techniques for augmenting them with mixed media, and the process of mounting, trimming, and waxing paper to wood for a modern, frame-free finish. OAS is very excited to welcome Tatjana to OAS! In this two-day workshop, participants will explore the playful world of papier mâché using familiar, household materials such as tinfoil, masking tape, and cardboard. Taking inspiration from Mexican Alebrijes and other mythological chimeras, participants will design and sculpt their own whimsical creatures that blend the real and the fantastical. Day One focuses on building armatures and learning how to make and apply homemade paper clay and pulp. Day Two will be devoted to painting and finishing, bringing each unique creature to life through colour, texture, and pattern. This workshop encourages creativity, experimentation, and storytelling through sculpture—no prior experience required! All materials are included, and artists of all ages are welcome! Participants are encouraged to wear clothing suitable for messy work or bring an apron.
