Level 2 (intermediate)
Instructor: Connie Lee
Tuesday evenings, 6:30- 9:30 p.m. in Studio Two
This class is 8 weeks and runs January 7 to February 25
Description:
In this 8-week course, Connie will walk you through a step-by-step approach in the fundamental principles of portrait painting from photos: drawing, measurements and proportion, value, temperature, background and so much more. Learn to simplify the process as you paint portraits with personality through confident brushwork, good colour choices and strong composition. She will help you choose a good reference photo, and you will paint two portraits using the reference images of your choice which could be yourself, your loved ones, celebrities, or your pet. Connie will give you the tools, techniques, and the confidence to enjoy painting portraits. Lots of demonstrations, and individual feedback.
*Week 1: Drawing
*Week 2: Colour mixing, value, choosing a good reference photo
*Week 3~5: Painting your first portrait
*Week 6~8: Painting your second portrait
==========
Materials:
*Sketch paper
*Pencil and eraser
(Week 1 will be solely focused on drawing. No need to bring painting materials.)
*Paint (oil or acrylic): White, Cadmium Yellow, Yellow Ocher, Cadmium Red, Alizarin Crimson, Viridian, Cerulean Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Burnt Sienna, Ivory Black
*Container for water or medium
*Medium – If you are bringing traditional oil paint, I recommend that you bring non-toxic thinner such as linseed oil or walnut oil from art supply stores. Odorless mineral spirit is allowed in the studio, too.
*Palette – disposable or reusable, preferably with a toned middle value such as a wooden palette or grey paper palette.
*Brushes – I recommend that you experiment with a handful of brushes of various shapes, textures and sizes. I use mostly filbert, ranging from about size 2 to 8. The biggest brush for this project should be about the width of two fingers. A mixture of bristle and synthetic or sable brushes is nice to have to explore different textures.
*Painting surface – We will need 2 painting surfaces. You can choose the size based on your personal project, ranging from 9×12 to 16×20 inches. A 9×12 inches surface will fit the head of a pet. A 16×20 inches surface will fit the head and shoulder of a human, and the larger negative space. Stretched canvas, canvas board or panels are all good.
*Paper towel
