I really learned a lot from this class. I chose it because I found watercolor to be the most challenging art medium for me and had no idea how to do portraits. Shelley gave so much useful advice and over the course of this class, I understood various techniques that I didn’t know about at all. I also found that as an instructor, she made the class very non-stressful and I was able to ask questions about my work. I signed up for more of Shelley’s classes because I really liked this one. Shelley Prior’s teaching style in her watercolour class is focused with great detail; however, the class atmosphere is relaxed, positive and non-threatening. (I know how intimidated new watercolour artists can be.) After watching many youtube lessons, I have found that, in contrast, Shelley leaves “no stone unturned” when it comes to explaining and demonstrating the minutiae of watercolour skills and how to be successful. For example she instructs on the exact way to hold a brush and mix exact colours to name after few. She constantly teaches observational skills when studying an object or scene in order to capture shapes, colour and contrasts. Shelley is a master of photographic quality work; however, she does not expect this level from her students, rather, she celebrates their individual style and accomplishments. (November, 2024)

I very much enjoyed Shelley Prior’s course. Shelley is patient, explains techniques very well, gives individual attention and is approachable for any questions. She also follows up with progress photos and explanations by email. She is SO talented. I will certainly sign up for future classes. (May 2024)
